Does Insurance Cover Therapy in Washington State? What to Know Before Starting Counseling

Does Insurance Cover Therapy in Washington State? What to Know Before Starting Counseling

If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy, you may have questions about the cost. Does health insurance cover counseling? How much will you have to pay out of pocket? And what can you do if you don’t have insurance or your plan doesn’t cover the services you need?

These are common questions, and understanding your options can make getting started feel less overwhelming.

At Integrated Therapy Services NW, we provide counseling for individuals, couples, and families in the Tacoma and Pierce County area, with telehealth services also available. Whether you’re exploring insurance coverage or looking for affordable counseling, understanding your options is a helpful first step.

Does health insurance cover therapy?

Many health insurance plans cover outpatient mental health counseling. However, coverage depends on your specific plan, the type of service you receive, and whether your therapist participates in your insurance network.

Your plan may have requirements related to deductibles, referrals, prior authorization, or medical necessity. Even when an insurance company covers counseling, your out-of-pocket costs can vary.

The best place to start is by checking your individual benefits rather than assuming that all plans from the same insurance company work the same way.

Understanding your out-of-pocket costs

Even when insurance covers therapy, you may still have some costs. Here are three common insurance terms worth understanding.

Copay: A fixed amount you pay for a covered service, such as a counseling appointment.

Deductible: The amount you may need to pay for covered healthcare services before your plan begins paying according to its benefits.

Coinsurance: A percentage of the allowed cost of a covered service that you pay.

For example, your plan might have a copay for each covered therapy session. Another plan might require you to meet your deductible before insurance contributes toward the cost. Some plans use coinsurance instead.

Your costs may also depend on whether your deductible has been met and whether your therapist is in network.

Before beginning counseling, contact your insurance company to ask about your behavioral health benefits and any costs you may be responsible for paying.

How do you find a therapist who accepts your insurance?

Finding a therapist who participates in your insurance network can help you understand your costs and avoid unexpected bills.

Insurance companies often maintain online provider directories, but the information may not always reflect current availability or participation. It’s a good idea to verify your benefits with your insurer and contact the counseling practice directly.

When looking for a therapist in Tacoma or elsewhere in Pierce County, consider asking:

  • Does the practice work with my specific insurance plan?
  • Is the therapist I would see in network?
  • Are new clients currently being accepted?
  • What will my estimated out-of-pocket cost be?
  • Do I need a referral or prior authorization?

At Integrated Therapy Services NW, insurance participation and provider availability can vary. Contacting our office is the best way to ask about your particular plan and learn what options may be available.

Does insurance cover couples counseling?

Insurance coverage for couples counseling can be different from coverage for individual therapy. Coverage depends on your plan and the nature of the service, and relationship counseling is not necessarily covered simply because your insurance covers mental health services.

Integrated Therapy Services NW does not accept insurance for couples counseling. If you’re looking for help with communication, recurring disagreements, relationship challenges, or strengthening your partnership, please keep this in mind when exploring your options.

If cost is a concern, there may be another option worth considering: our free Emerging Clinicians Counseling Series, described below. The program serves individuals, couples, and families through a short-term counseling model, subject to prescreening and suitability requirements.

What if you don’t have insurance coverage for therapy?

If you don’t have health insurance, or your plan doesn’t cover the counseling you need, you may still have options.

At Integrated Therapy Services NW, we offer the Emerging Clinicians Counseling Series, which provides 12 free therapy sessions for eligible individuals, couples, and families.

In this program, clients work with a co-therapy team of master’s-level candidate therapists. The teams receive supervision from experienced, licensed clinicians as they develop their clinical skills.

The program offers an opportunity to explore personal challenges, improve communication, work through relationship concerns, and develop new ways of navigating life’s difficulties without the cost of traditional counseling.

The Emerging Clinicians Counseling Series uses a short-term treatment model and isn’t the right fit for every situation. A prescreening process helps determine whether the program is appropriate for your needs.

If you’re looking for free counseling in Tacoma or Pierce County, we encourage you to learn more about the program.

What if your insurance doesn’t cover a particular service?

If your plan doesn’t cover a service or provider, you can ask your insurance company about other in-network providers, check whether your plan includes out-of-network benefits, or explore other counseling options.

If your insurer denies coverage for a service you believe should be covered, ask for the reason in writing. Depending on your plan and the circumstances, you may have the right to appeal the decision.

How do you get started with counseling?

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out to a therapist. It’s okay to start by asking questions about services, insurance, costs, and availability.

Integrated Therapy Services NW provides counseling for individuals, couples, children, adolescents, and families in the Tacoma and Pierce County area. Telehealth counseling is also available for clients throughout Washington State, subject to provider and service availability.

If you’re considering counseling, we encourage you to explore your options and ask questions about which services may be a good fit.

You can visit our New Clients page to learn about getting started, or contact our office with questions about insurance participation and provider availability.

If traditional insurance coverage isn’t an option, our free Emerging Clinicians Counseling Series may be another place to start.
