What to Expect in Your First Counseling Session
If you’ve never been to counseling before, it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous.
You might wonder:
“Will I have to tell my whole life story?”
“What if I don’t know what to say?”
“Is it going to be awkward?”
The good news is that your first counseling session is usually much more relaxed than most people expect.
Here’s what you can expect.
We’ll start by getting to know you
Your first session isn’t about fixing everything in one hour.
It’s about getting to know you.
Your counselor will probably ask questions about what’s been going on in your life, what prompted you to schedule an appointment, and what you’re hoping will be different.
There’s no right or wrong way to answer. You don’t need to have everything organized or know exactly what you want to say.
Many people come in saying, “I’m not really sure where to start.”
That’s perfectly okay.
You don’t have to share everything
Some people worry they’ll be expected to talk about their deepest hurts or most painful memories during the first appointment.
That’s rarely the case.
You get to decide what you’re comfortable sharing and when.
A good counselor wants to understand your story, but there’s no pressure to tell it all at once. Trust develops over time, and therapy should move at a pace that feels safe for you.
We’ll talk about your goals
One of the questions you’ll probably hear is:
“What would you like to get out of counseling?”
You may have a clear answer.
Or you may simply know that something isn’t working and you’d like life to feel different.
Both are completely normal.
Together, you’ll begin identifying goals and deciding what would be most helpful moving forward.
Ask questions
The first session isn’t just for your counselor to get to know you.
It’s also your chance to get to know them.
If you’re wondering how they work, what experience they have, or what future sessions might look like, ask.
Counseling works best when it feels like a partnership.
It’s okay to “try it out”
One of the biggest misconceptions about counseling is that scheduling a first appointment means you’re committing to months of therapy.
It doesn’t.
Think of your first session as an opportunity to see whether it feels like a good fit.
Afterward, ask yourself:
- Did I feel comfortable?
- Did I feel listened to?
- Did I feel respected?
- Could I see myself talking with this person again?
If the answer is yes, wonderful.
If not, that’s okay too. Finding the right counselor sometimes takes more than one try, and that’s a normal part of the process.
You don’t have to do this alone
Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, relationship challenges, depression, grief, parenting stress, or simply feeling overwhelmed, reaching out for support is a sign of strength—not weakness.
At Integrated Therapy Services NW, we’ve had the privilege of working with individuals, couples, and families throughout Pierce County. We know that taking the first step can feel intimidating, and we do our best to make that first session comfortable, welcoming, and focused on what matters most to you.
You don’t need to have all the answers before you begin.
Sometimes, all it takes is showing up for that first conversation.
